the tournament.

The SDIA Bantam Oilers had a very productive Memorial Day weekend as they captured the Valencia Memorial Cup.
The weekend began with a (8-2 win over the cool cats.
Saturday the Oilers ran up against a much tougher opponent the summerhawks who handed the Oilers their first and what turned out to be their last defeat of the tournament. Although the Oilers out shot their opponent and for the most part out played them they didn't have the answer for the Summerhawks hot goal tender as they fell to the Summerhawks 4-2. The loss would turn out to be a blessing in disguise as some of the Oilers players, for the first time at that level got a taste of the intensity and excitement that is travel hockey. It also allowed the coaching staff an opportunity to observe some weaknesses in the Blackhawks game. This would be helpful come the inevitable show down for the championship on Monday.
The Oilers needed a win on Sunday against the Coolcatz to advance to the championship game. It turned out to be the most exciting game of the tournament for the Bantams. The Coolcats pulled their goalie in the last minute to try to get the equalizer but the Oilers hung on for a hard fought, gritty 5-4 win to advance to the final. The Oilers were led by several players.
What many thought would be a close game, the championship game against the Blackhawks turned out to be anything but. The Oilers trounced the Blackhawks 8-3. The same opponent who had handed the Oilers their only defeat earlier in the tournament . They were no match this time for the champions. The Oilers never let up from the opening face off.
Coach Curry commented "Of course the contributions of (Nick K and Wes) played an important role in our success this weekend but they couldn't have done it alone it took a total team effort. We asked our players to play certain roles on the team and they responded.
We had an outstanding effort all weekend throughout the lineup starting with our goaltenders Donavan and Smitty , A strong defense . All three forward lines contributed with players like (Raymond) or as we like to call him, Buff, doing the heavy work going to the net and banging in front of the net and opening up space for his line mates and contributing on the scoreboard as well.
Players like Cameron Rorick pulling triple duty playing on his regular line, point on the power play and helping out killing penalties were big contributors as well. There isn't time to point out all the individual efforts that brought us the championship but as i said it was a total team effort.
I also want to thank Craig S for organizing and entering us in the tournament, and also Sandy M who did so much extra work organizing this effort with the Bantam team. I would also like to thank some of the players who didn't complain when I moved them to different positions that they weren't comfortable with but did the job they were asked for the benefit of the team.
Finally, a big thank you to all the parents who were so great over the weekend letting myself and Joe M and Smitty, to whom I am very grateful for their help, coach the boys without any parental interference whatsoever, almost unheard of in this day and age.
It was a great tournament for the boys and I hope the parents as well and they both deserve congratulations on a job well done."
