Tie-break Procedure
When
2 or more teams have the same number of points (2 for a win, 1 for a tie) in
league or round-robin play, the following tie-breakers will be applied in
order, until the tie is broken.
Overtime Procedure
If
the score is tied at the end of the third period of regulation there will be a
5-minute (running-clock) overtime period. There will be a 1-minute intermission
period before the start of overtime. If the score is tied at the end of the
overtime period the teams will proceed immediately to a 3-player shootout.
Shoot-Out Procedure
The shoot-out will progress in 3-player increments.
3 players from each team
will take a penalty shot, with the home team starting first, and the shots
alternating between teams. If a tie still exists after the first round, and
there are at least 6 skaters dressed on each team, 3 DIFFERENT players will
take a penalty shot, again alternating between teams.
If one of the teams has fewer
skaters, the second round (or third, or fourth, etc.) of the shoot-out will be
limited to the number of skaters on the shorter team. For example, if one team
has 5 skaters and the other has 7, the 2nd round will only consist of 2 shots
and then the cycle, starting from the first of three, will be repeated. If a
tie still exists after the second round, the procedures, from the previous
rounds will be repeated until the tie is broken.
The purpose for both of
these rules is to avoid penalizing a full team by making their less-skilled
players go against the "guns" on the shorter team in the 2nd,
3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th rounds of the
shootout.
